Thank you very much for your interest in the ACR Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation Program.
Below are the surveyor requirements and some preliminary information about the program.

Effective October 1, 2017, the surveyor requirements are:

For Radiation Oncologists:

  • ABR certified and 3 years clinical experience post residency
  • Full member of the ACR
  • Be in active clinical practice.
  • Radiation Oncologists may continue to be ACR surveyors up to 3 years following their retirement from active practice if they:
    • Have re-certified through the ABR Maintenance of Certification process or
    • Can attest to continuing competence in current technologies such as IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT, etc.

For Physicists:

  • ABR, CCPM, or ABMP certified with a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post certification
  • Full member of the ACR
  • Be in active clinical practice.
  • Medical Physicists may continue to be ACR surveyors up to 1 year following their retirement from an active practice if they:
    • Have re-certified through the ABR Maintenance of Certification process or
    • Can attest to continuing competence in current technologies such as IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT, etc.

First steps to becoming a surveyor:

  • Complete the online surveyor application and conflict of interest form and upload your CV.
  • Complete surveyor tutorial. (Contact ACR staff).
  • Participate in a survey as a trainee.
  • You will be partnered with an experienced physician or physicist for your first site visit.

A radiation oncologist and physicist form the surveyor team. During the onsite review, the surveyors tour the facility; meet and interview the medical director, the chief of physics, dosimetrist and chief therapist and/or department manager; review 10 pre-selected patient records using electronic data collection forms, verify information submitted in the application, review the facility’s quality assurance and improvement program, peer review activities and policies and procedures.

Travel expenses are covered and you will receive a $500 honorarium as a Trainee. After training surveyors will receive a $1000 per day honorarium (does not include travel days). We encourage you to participate in at least two surveys a year.
